Clint Dempsey’s Diary

My biggest dream was playing in the World Cup. I had played in a U-20 youth championship where I only got on the field for 15 minutes or so, then I got my chance to go to World Cup in 2006. After the first game with the Czech Republic, when I didn’t get to play, I was thinking, “Here we go again, another World Cup where I’ll hardly get to see the pitch.” I really just wanted a chance to be on the field and prove myself. I killed myself during training to show the coach that all I wanted was a shot at accomplishing my dream. Before the Italy match I got the news that I’d be starting, and I just wanted to make sure that I took advantage of that moment.

We got a draw in that game and after playing well I got a chance to make my second start against Ghana. So there I was, starting two of three games in the World Cup when I didn’t think I was going to feature after I didn’t even see the field in the first match. Being able to score a goal against Ghana was the ultimate dream for me. It’s my favorite goal and my favorite memory in my football career. Being in a World Cup and scoring a goal, that’s when I knew I had arrived, that I had made it. That’s when I knew anything was possible. In my mind, that was a dream come true and I knew I could die a happy man because everything after that would be icing on the cake.

Underdog Zambia Wins African Cup of Nations

“After taking off from Libreville in Gabon 19 years ago, a military plane carrying most of the squad crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 30 people on board, including 18 players, were killed. Before the crash, it was a golden era for Zambia’s football team. Their squad was expected to qualify for the 1994 World Cup, but of course things took a turn for the tragic.

19 years later, there are celebrations all over Zambia. And for good reason. Zambia, for the first time ever, are the Champions of Africa. Where did they win it? Libreville. Accepting the role of underdogs going into the final against the Ivory Coast, a team filled with world class talent like Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, and Gervinho, the Zambians, led by coach Herve Renard, played fearlessly. There were no goals in regulation, so penalty kicks decided who would would be crowned the best team in Africa. Against all odds, Zambia won 8-7 on penalties in what was one of the most dramatic shoot-outs in history. Throughout the shoot-out, the Zambian players and staff were singing, creating a surreal environment that transcended the events partaking on the pitch. The trophy doesn’t make up for what was lost 19 years ago, but tonight a feeling of vindication will fill the air throughout Zambia”

Calvary Christian High School Benefit Tournament

This seven a side tournament raised funds for the girls varsity soccer team of Calvary Christian High in Vista, CA. Passport Soccer was more than happy to have the opportunity to help out by donating 15 balls to the tournament. I was able to attend only for a few hours, just enough time to shoot some pictures of some friends who were participating in the tourney.
